# Free single-image recovery | Image Tools

> Recover publicly accessible Squarespace images in their largest available source-format renditions, bypassing Squarespace's usual WebP delivery. Free for up to five images per browser in a rolling 24-hour period. No account, email address or payment required.

## What it does

Squarespace commonly delivers images in WebP format, even when they were originally uploaded as JPEG or PNG. Downloading an image directly from a Squarespace website may therefore give you a WebP file rather than the source format.

Image Tools bypasses WebP delivery to retrieve the largest publicly available source rendition of an image, usually in JPEG or PNG format.

Submit the direct URL of an image hosted by Squarespace, typically from `images.squarespace-cdn.com`. Image Tools retrieves the image and returns it to your browser for download.

The tool supports JPEG, PNG, GIF and source WebP images. No Squarespace login, password or website administrator access is required.

## Free allowance

Recover up to five individual images per browser in a rolling 24-hour period.

The limit is enforced server-side using an essential, short-lived signed browser identifier. No Image Tools account or email address is required.

## File quality and limitations

Image Tools retrieves the largest source rendition Squarespace makes publicly available. This is not necessarily the exact original uploaded file. Squarespace may have resized, compressed or otherwise processed the image.

Recovering a JPEG or PNG source rendition is different from converting a WebP image back to JPEG or PNG. Image Tools retrieves the available source-format file rather than converting the delivered WebP image.

The service can only recover publicly accessible images. It cannot retrieve files held exclusively in the Squarespace Asset Library or images that require authentication.

Images are processed temporarily and are not permanently stored by Image Tools. Downloaded files are saved by the visitor's browser.

## When to use single-image recovery

- Download a JPEG or PNG rendition of a Squarespace image that is normally delivered as WebP.
- Recover an individual image when the original uploaded file is no longer available.
- Retrieve a publicly accessible image without access to the website's administration interface.
- Check the available source rendition of an image before purchasing whole-site recovery.
